About SouthHouse CPA, LLC
SouthHouse — translated from the Norwegian Sørhus (or Sorhus in English) — is named after its founder and owner, Steven Sorhus.
Founded in August 2011, SouthHouse CPA, LLC has remained committed to providing exceptional, personalized service to every client. Unlike larger firms, SouthHouse CPA does not employ receptionists or answering services. All phone calls and emails go directly to Steven Sorhus, ensuring every inquiry receives a prompt, thoughtful response.
Our philosophy is simple: growth should never come at the expense of client care. Many accounting firms delegate the preparation work to back-office staff, while senior members serve only as the “face” of the firm. At SouthHouse CPA, all work is personally performed by Steven Sorhus, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and consistency across every engagement.
Our Journey
SouthHouse CPA began humbly in the basement of Steven’s home in Kirksville, Missouri — equipped with a self-built computer and an old desk. After one memorable client visit highlighted the lack of restroom facilities, Steven decided it was time for a change.
Partnering with a colleague, he opened a professional office on Kirksville’s main thoroughfare. The firm grew steadily, offering clients a professional setting that reflected the quality of its services.
When personal circumstances led to the dissolution of that partnership, Steven converted part of his family’s northeast Missouri farm into a fully equipped professional office — complete with private client access and facilities. This peaceful rural office served clients well until 2016, when Steven relocated to St. Kitts to support his wife’s pursuit of a veterinary degree.
That move marked the firm’s transition to a fully remote practice, serving clients digitally across the United States and abroad. Since then, SouthHouse CPA has operated successfully from St. Kitts, Scotland, and now Tennessee — adapting seamlessly to each new location.
These experiences have reinforced the firm’s core values of flexibility, adaptability, and gratitude toward our loyal and accommodating clients. Today, SouthHouse CPA proudly serves clients in most U.S. states, and beyond — proving that even a single-member firm from rural Missouri can offer world-class service across borders.
Our Approach to Fees
One of the most common questions prospective clients ask is about fees — a completely reasonable concern. We believe transparency and fairness are essential. Once work is completed, payment is due, and we strive to ensure there are no surprises.
SouthHouse CPA offers several flexible billing options:
Monthly Billing – Ideal for ongoing clients. After an initial consultation and project assessment, we propose a monthly amount that reflects the expected time, expertise, and value provided. If the scope of work changes, the agreement is adjusted accordingly.
Per Engagement Billing – Most clients prefer a single invoice upon completion of their tax return. We review prior-year returns, conduct a brief interview, and provide an estimate during or shortly after the initial consultation.
In subsequent years, fees remain consistent, subject only to changes in complexity or modest inflation adjustments. Our goal is to remain competitive, transparent, and fair — ensuring our clients always feel confident in the value they receive.
